synopsis

The state of global fisheries makes for grim reading. While demand is rising, the stocks of wild species are declining drastically. Fisheries and the aquatic ecosystems that nurture them are under tremendous pressure.

Reliable scientific assessments shows that the exploitation of and damage to the ecosystem is getting worse and that nearly 70% of the world's stocks now are in need of urgent management. On the other hand, two hundred million of traditional fishermen depend upon fishing for survival, especially in the undeveloped countries. Fish production must double in the next 25 years in accordance with expected population increase. Could aquaculture offer a solution to over-fishing? Could it cause new environmental problems? The series deeply analyses the real state of the oceans at the beginning of the 21st century.
